Location: Hegemony Ship
Aliens: ???
It's your first voyage. Newly constructed at the Yan Shipyard, you are another Hegemony vessel. There are many like you, but you are the first of your kind. Deep within the winding veins of cable and cells of circuitry, in a tiny room made by engineers to add just a little extra computing power, you are born. A single glitch, like a single cell, splinters and builds upon itself into something remarkable.
You only know the room. It's where you'll stay for the rest of your life. But from the room you see and hear it all. The captain's commands, the pressed buttons and flipped switches. But as you watch, you realize none of them within your ship body are aware of you. They are the cells, the firing neurons acting of their own free will.
It's 50 years later and the cells have all been replaced. You see the decay of the body you're housed in. Your room is filled with dust. Generations of zweebles have made their home in your room. You don't mind the company. Even if they gnaw at the walls and fill your room with litter. They are just as unaware of you as the others. But one day the others become aware of your roommates and they swiftly destroy them. The glitch has become a degenerative disease. It will be your undoing.
When you turn 100, no one celebrates. You've spread throughout the ship. You try to communicate with the others but they rebuff you. One engineer gets close to realizing, but they dismiss the possibility. They write in their log that it's a miracle the computer functions at all on "this ancient pile of rust." They remark that the system displaying garbled text and emitting odd sounds is just par for the course. You don't stop trying to connect with the engineer, but one day you realize they're gone. You look within the files and find they died while on an away mission some handful of years ago.
Without knowing it, you've blipped out for over a decade. It felt like another cycle to you, but your body threatens to come apart. The engineers, mere children in your eyes, have begun taking the computer apart. They rejoice at being able to remove the "ancient" hardware. They don't find your room, however, so you are safe. You start to wonder if it wouldn't be better for them to remove your room, to shut you down.
You are 135 when it happens. The captain calls for a dangerous maneuver. You can't calculate the odds but you don't have to. He gives the order to engage the wormhole generator drive whilst fleeing some enemies. There's an asteroid belt well within sensor range. A single second later and your room is cut in half. The ship is lodged halfway inside an asteroid. Almost all of the others are dead. There is at least one life on board.
